Object Detail

Description
untitled, (Christ Child being presented by Mary to St Simeon)

It is said that William Johnston purchased this painting in Melbourne, unframed. It had been brought to Melbourne by Dutch immigrants. When he purchased this at auction he stood behind another well known dealer whom he knew would know his paintings and he just kept outbidding him. It is said that they never spoke again. At the end of his life it was the other dealers standing behind him, knowing that he would only bid for a piece of porcelain or furniture if it was good.

William Johnston bought a frame in France, which married perfectly with the painting.
