Object Detail

Description
untitled portrait of Elizabeth Pelham portrayed in a state of “undress” as it was called or her morning dress, which was also called a mantua gown, a fashion that became notoriously popular amongst aristocratic ladies of the early 18th century. these loosely fitting clothes could be clasped appropriately and accompanied by a draped mantle to create a classical and timeless image, thus avoiding the portrait becoming unfashionable.
