Object Detail
Description
teabowl and saucer of scalloped form painted in a Kakiemon palette with the Squirrel and Grapes design. palette is copying Japanese porcelains and are excellent examples of each of these elements, as well as showcasing Chantilly’s beautiful ceramic body at this time.
In 1735, letters patent gave Ciquaire Cirou, Director of Chantilly, a twenty-year authority to make porcelain in imitation of the Japanese. The soft paste body was similar to St Cloud, but the inclusion of ashes of tin in the glaze gave the fired body a much whiter appearance. It provided an ideal canvas to display the asymmetrical designs and distinctive Kakiemon palette of overglaze yellow, blue, turquoise, green, brown and red.
