Object Detail

Description
mirror frame plain, outer band of moulding which encircles the front of the frame simulates three joined rounded sections bound at seven points by modelled gesso ribbon. The deep concave inner moulding has a continuous band of gilded wood beading applied to its centre. The inner edge of the gilded frame terminates in a band of raised concave moulding. A rosewood circular slip frame bridges the convex mirror glass and the gilded outer frame. The slip is scored with four incised rings which form a reeded border to the slip frame. The incised sections are highlighted in black-simulating ebony. The mirror is surmounted by modelled wide-based gilded plinth. The base of the plinth shows evidence of shallow fluting. The plinth narrows to a baluster form on which stands ebony or ebonised carved eagle-with wings outstretched. Attached by chains to the eagles beak fall two gilded lobe forms. VERSO-the frame is constructed to eight curved sections in pine. An inner rim of laminated timber is fitted inside the frame. A pine panel of three pieces of timber joined serves as the backing to the mirror. Evidence of a paper backing, now almost entirely lost, can be found in the lower section and to the right hand side. The rear of the plinth carving shows sections of new gilded and the flat carved back of the eagle.
