Object Detail

Description
mantel clock, sphinx bird sides, on paw feet, circular dial, striking movement. This clock appears to be transitional between neoclassical and empire. The dial simply tells us "A Paris" with no maker's name. The decorative features of the pineapple finial and the palmette bezel are classical; the winged griffins flanking the case are derived from ancient Egypt and were a neoclassical feature which became enormously popular during the First Empire period. I would date it as circa 1800-1810.
