Object Detail

Description
Sofa table, from a trio of tables including two card tables. Drop side sofa table in Rosewood veneer and brass inlay. The Rosewood tabletop is decorated with a continuous scroll and diamond pattern which is further defined by parallel bands of inlay brass which continue around the entire top. This is carefully matched at the flaps. The border grains are cross banded to a central section and are darker.

Sofa table with two flaps, two sham and two real drawers and a quadripartite base with swept sabre legs terminating with cast brass feet in the form of lion's paws. The decoration includes anthemion, Prince of Wales feathers? and an unusual "calligraphic" inlay to the top. Cast brass handles in the form of shells and wheatsheaves. Drawer edged with brass. The drawer frames are made of Mahogany. Fine quality locks (*). The structural carcass of the table is made of Beech and Pine.

The tables are said to have been located by William Johnston in Perth, Western Australia, circa 1970 however there is no definite proof of this except for the remnants of a shipping label showing the letters "W.A. which may or may not relate to this table.
