Description
portrait miniature of Lady Dorchester, oval, lady with dark curly hair which is draped with a buff coloured veil. She wears a plum coloured dress with a blue drape tried in white with a blue shoulder drape centrally pinned with a pearl drop brooch. The sleeves are slashed and clipped with jewelled clasps to reveal the white undergarment. In the background is red drapery pulled to one side to reveal the base of a doric column and a tassel. All is encased in a silver oval mount surmounted by a decorative circular hanging device. Both sides of the miniature are glazed in convex glass. No marks are evident on silver mount.

The vellum backing is visible due to deterioration of a silk backing on which is inscribed "Lady Dorchester / by / Mary Beale / 1677 | Signed "MB" lower left centre of portrait. Verso inscription "Lady Dorchester / by / Mary Beale / 1677" (Please note that it is not by Mary Beale)
