Description
print, portrait of a woman sitting looking to the left Sappho seated three-quarter length to left with legs crossed and head in three-quarter profile, looking up at the cloudy sky with lips slightly parted, her left arm resting on her knee; wearing a wreath of leaves in her flowing hair, armband, and sleeveless transparent dress; after Richard Westall. 1802 after "Portrait of the artists wife as Sappho" (sic) by Richard Westall RA (English, 1765-1836) possibly fully lettered below image with the title, dedication by the publishers to the Princess of Wales over four lines, production details and publication line: 'Painted by R. Westall R. A. / Engraved by E. Scriven Historical Engraver to H. R. H. The Prince of Wales. / Publish'd Jany. 1st. 1802 by Clay & Scriven, No, 18, Ludgate Hill London.' Inscribed on work "Painted bt R. Westall R.A. / Engraved by E. Scriven Historical Engraver to H.R.H. The Princess of Wales / SAPPHO. / to HER ROYAL HIGHNESS tHE PRINCESS OF WALES. / this plate is with Her Gracious permission humbly Dedicated by Her Highness'es most obliged & elevated Servants." possibly Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796-1817), Daughter of George IV Charlotte's parents separated a few months after her birth, their marriage having lasted only a year. Charlotte was brought up by governesses and saw little of her mother. Contemporary descriptions of Princess Charlotte suggest that she was a 'well-set, young beautiful woman' with a masculine manner. Sir Thomas Lawrence found her 'wanting in elegance of deportment', but noted that 'if she does nothing gracefully, she does everything kindly'. She married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816. they enjoyed only a few months of happiness before she died in childbirth the following year. Public grief at her death was heightened by the universal scorn felt for the rest of the royal family.
