portrait, Mary Louise Johnston, William Johnston's mother, in an octagonal engraved wooden frame Mary Louisa Friedrichs, known as Louise William Johnston's mother, Mary Louise Friedrichs (1880-1956) was born in Lockwood, Victoria and grew up in Maldon. By 1900, she was living and working at Stanford House, the home of Thomas Welton Stanford on site of what is now the Freemasons Hospital in Clarendon Street, East Melbourne. Mary Louise Friedrichs (known by her second given name) met her future husband, Robert Alexander Johnston, through his sister, Emily Johnston, who was a friend of a Miss Cupit, the housekeeper at Stanford House
