Object Detail

Description
untitled (landscape) of rocky coastal cliffs, fishing boat and fisherman, built up in layers of thin coloured washes, broadly applied. Finer detail is evident in the painting of the rocks and the rock face to the left foreground. The tones are built up with more heavily applied ochres, brown, greys and black. The cliff face in the middle distance is painted with two thinly applied washes-grey and light brown. The rocks dominate the left foreground and the right middle distance. Part of a wooden sailing boat of two masts is beached on the sand-partly concealed by the large rocks. The boat contains two cray pots and ropes hang from the taller mast. A device, possibly connected to the rudder, protrudes beyond the stern of the boat. A man wearing a red hat, white shirt and brown trousers sits on arock in the foreground, facing the sea. In the far middle distance two figures, one standing, one seated can be seen silhouetted by the sea and sand. The standing man appears to be holding a basket or cray pot. three gulls fly in the sky above the boat.
