Description
box, hinged, for chess (or draughts on exterior) with backgammon design interior with chess pieces (set) [incomplete] in carved and turned bone Jaques style Barleycorn chess set in white and stained red
The English Barleycorn chess set was produced from around 1820 – 1850. It was essentially an English design and was traditionally made from bone with red stained pieces opposing bleached white ones.
[One side stained red, the opposing side left natural, the kings with crowns surmounted by ball finials, the queens with larger spherical finials, the bishops with reeded split mitres, the knights as horses' heads, the pawns with ball finials, all on baluster supports with concentrically turned]
