Object Detail

Description
plate, circular, armorial, monogrammed from 'The George III service'. The centre finely painted with the Royal coats of Arms, the shield encircled by the Order of the Garter ribbon, the broad cobalt blue border enriched with crowned 'GR' monogram with gilded oak leaves and acorns between sprays of laurels.

This plate was first commissioned to the order of King George III in 1805, and each bears the crest of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The prestigious Order of the Garter was established by King Edward III in 1348, who was inspired by the legendary tales of King Arthur and the knights of the round table to form his own collective of honourable knights. Centuries later, it is known as the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain.

Appointments into the order are solely at the sovereign's and is limited to twenty-four living members, including members of the British Royal family and foreign monarchs.

Membership is traditionally in recognition of a national contribution for outstanding public service or personal service to the Royal family.
